How Wide Should a Men’s Wedding Band Be?
You spent so much time selecting her perfect engagement ring but when it’s finally time to start shopping for your own wedding band you may feel at a loss. Many men aren’t sure where to begin. Some don’t know what looks best on them, others have never worn a ring before. The basic details are easy enough to figure out. There’s a wealth of information online to help you shop for a men’s wedding band; from learning about different wedding ring metals, how to find the right style for you, and so on. But when you get down to the details finding the right width and sizing of a men’s wedding band can remain a mystery.
A lot of thought and research goes into the purchase of the bride’s engagement and wedding bands. Your wedding ring is the one piece of jewelry you’ll (ideally) wear for the rest of your life, so shouldn’t that same attention be paid to the details of your ring?
Jordan Jack has you covered, from choosing the right metal to finding your perfect style. We’re here to help you every step of the way. Our Home Try On service for wedding rings is a no-brainer for exploring different widths and sizes to find the one that will best suit you. Let’s get you started with everything you need to know about men’s wedding band width and sizing.
Wedding Band Width
First, be certain you don’t confuse width with thickness. The thickness of a wedding band is how tall it is when viewed from the profile of the ring. For our purposes we’ll be discussing how wide the band is when viewed on your finger.
Wedding ring width is measured in millimeters. The higher the mm, the wider the band. To get a general idea when trying to picture a particular ring on your finger, fish out some pocket change. A standard U.S. nickel is just under 2mm thick. By stacking nickels, you can see a fair comparison. Just imagine those stacked nickels with a hole in the center for your finger!
There is no magic formula for deciding which width is right. It’s really a matter of personal preference. Some men love a big, hefty ring while others prefer something that’s a little lighter. Whatever you decide, make sure you’ll love it now and for all the years to come.
Jordan Jack carries rings in 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 7mm, 8mm, and 9mm widths. 6mm is the most common width for a men’s wedding band but narrower and wider styles are also very popular. If you’re having a hard time deciding which width is right for you, 6mm is a good place to start. From there you can decide whether to go wider or narrower. Luckily Jordan Jack allows you to choose up to five rings for your Home Try On box, which means you could choose one in almost every width we offer!
Narrow Wedding Bands
Narrow wedding bands of 4-5mm are just right for men with smaller frames, small hands, or narrow fingers. They’re also an excellent choice for men who have never worn a ring or don’t love the feeling of jewelry on their fingers. Narrow rings are usually lighter in weight and often more comfortable than their wider counterparts because they take up less space on the hand.
Our 14k Rose Gold High Polish Band, 4mm dazzles with its gorgeous rose gold finish. Its narrow width and comfort fit make it perfect for the man who wants an unobtrusive ring that still makes a statement.
Jordan Jack’s Tantalum Milgrain Band, 5mm is a perfect marriage of sophistication and strength. A modern milgrain edge design flanks a brushed tantalum center while a sleek, high polished inner band provides a comfortable feel.
Medium Width Rings
The Goldilocks of wedding band widths...not too narrow, not too wide, these rings are just right. Suitable for most styles and tastes, rings in the 6-7mm width are anything but standard fare. Comfortable and easy to wear, medium width bands look great on pretty much everyone. If in doubt, you’ll never go wrong here.
This 14k White Gold High Polished Band, 6mm is exactly what you think of when you picture a classic, timeless wedding band. In stunning, shiny white gold, this ring will stand the test of time and can be passed on for generations. A modern comfort fit and smooth finish make it easy to wear for a lifetime.
Our Black Stainless Steel and 1/7cttw Diamond Band, 7mm features a tough stainless steel black band with 12 diamonds in the center channel. The smooth inner band and brushed polished edges lend sophistication while the bold black color is sure to stand out.
Wide Wedding Bands
Wide bands make a statement. An 8 or 9mm wedding ring is perfect for big guys or a man with large hands or wide fingers. A wide ring can look awesome on men with smaller hands or narrow fingers too, so don’t limit yourself! If you’re someone who likes to rock a weighty or eye-catching ring a wide band could be for you.
Jordan Jack’s Cobalt Yellow and White Two-Tone Carbon Fiber Inside Band, 8mm is a striking marriage of materials that seamlessly blends old with new. The timeless combo of silver and gold contrasts beautifully with a modern cobalt shank and carbon fiber inner band. Designed to satisfy the many facets of your personality.
The Black Stainless Steel and Blue Diamond Band, 9mm is a ring that could never be ignored. Blue diamonds on a brushed black center band add a sparkly flair. Contemporary step edges meet a white stainless steel inner band that shines brilliantly. If you like to make an entrance, this is your ring.
How to Find Your Perfect Size Ring
Now that you’ve chosen your five favorite rings for your Home Try On box, how do you know what size to order? Each Home Try on package includes a ring sizing guide so you can find your perfect fit, but downloading and printing our online sizing guide can help you get one step closer to your exact match.
We recommend ordering the size you find with the online ring sizer plus a size smaller and a size larger. Feel free to also choose a couple of half sizes to round out your Home Try On box.
When you receive your Home Try On box spend some time trying each ring on to assess the fit. When you think you’ve found the right size wear it for a while to make certain it remains comfortable. Try it on at different times throughout the day so you can ensure it will fit even when your fingers swell or shrink with temperature fluctuations and other variables. The right fit should be snug but not restrictive. If your skin is bulging above or below the ring then your ring is too tight. You should be able to turn the ring around on your finger, but if it spins freely it’s too loose. Many men have large knuckles and it might take a little wiggling to get the ring over your knuckle. That’s okay as long as you don’t have to resort to tricks like soap or oil to put your ring on or take it back off.
Get Acquainted with Your Sample Rings
You have three days to live with your five sample rings and decide which one is The One. Take your time and really get to know the rings. Pay close attention to all the little details; the fit, the width, the feel of it on your finger...these are all important things to consider.
When you’ve made your final choice (we know you’d like to keep them all!) send the sample rings back. Order your favorite in your size and add engraving if you’d like. Then sit back and wait for your new Jordan Jack wedding band to arrive at your doorstep!
